Barefoot Running – What’s Your Take?

by ZEMster on August 19, 2010

In early human history, barefoot running was widespread, but with the introduction of modern footwear in industrialized countries, running barefoot was replaced with running shoes. It remains relatively common in many poorer nations where the cost of a pair of running shoes is out of reach.

Competitive runners in virtually all the running sport wear running shoes. There have been exceptions to the rule, in particular a few Olympic champions and world record holders Abebe Bikila and Tegla Loroupe, as well as Zola Budd.

The human mechanics of running differ significantly when shoes are used. When running

shoeless the balls of the feet strikes the ground with the most of the force. Running in padded shoes typically alters this as more emphasis is placed on the heel and the area towards the back of the foot.

Proponents of the barefoot running movement, argue that it is healthier for feet and reduces risk of chronic injuries. Some have pointed out that repetitive stress injuries due to the impact of heel striking in padded running shoes is a prime motivator in their move to shoeless running.

Health claims surrounding barefoot running are supported by some research, but the research is not conclusive. While there is still room for more analysis, there is no question that for those who have decided to switch, protection of the foot pad is an immediate concern amonth adherents.

We see a lot of articles about barefoot running these days, and some of you out there are running in ZEM’s to protect your feet from cuts and abrasions. We do recommend you follow the advice of your doctor when starting out. Find natural running paths, dirt paths, grass covered parks, and avoid the hard asphalt or concrete paths.

If its natural and serves your style do it in ZEM’s and let us know about your experience. If you have photos or videos to share, contact us! We would love to feature your story in the blog.

I’ve been searching for the perfect minimalist shoe, and the ZEM’s seem to fit the bill. They are light and do not have any unnecessary support. Best of all, they seem to be very reasonably priced, unlike the VFF’s and Teva Plana EVO’s, which are ridiculously priced for being a minimal shoe.

My problem with other minimal shoes, such as racing flats and Puma Salohs and K Streets is how narrow they are. I need a very wide toebox. Heck, currently I’m running in 4E width asics gt 2140.

The ZEM’s seem like they would stretch out well

I am going to pick up a pair and see how I like them. Keep me updated if you ever create a runner-specific version, as I am running half-marathons and a marathon in the near future. I’d love to try out a pair that is made to be durable for running on pavement, which is my only concern with the current ZEM’s.
